How to bet on NBA ROY odds

There are several popular NBA futures bets, including on the winners of the NBA Finals and MVP. Rookie of the Year futures odds are among the most popular as well.

Sportsbooks typically post the Rookie of The Year NBA odds soon after the NBA Draft, if not sooner. Some sportsbooks may prefer for certain factors to be solidified before posting odds – i.e. what prospects are officially available, where players land, etc. – but if you take some time to poke around, you may find some platforms willing to offer odds leading up to the pre-draft process.

But certainly by the time the NBA Draft concludes, NBA fans and bettors will have the opportunity to place wagers on fresh futures odds on the league’s newcomers. It will also be a great time to claim your bonus from one of the several NC mobile sports betting options.

Best sportsbooks for NBA Rookie of the Year bets

Keep in mind that there isn’t necessarily one sportsbook that stands above and beyond its competition.

There are plenty of factors to consider, including the actual sports odds, which aren’t static or released on set schedules. Therefore, one sportsbook may have more appealing odds for one player, and a competitor may have more appealing odds for a different player.

A month later, that dynamic may switch. That’s why it’s important to keep multiple sportsbooks in your rotation. The following four represent great places to start.

DraftKings Sportsbook

North Carolina bettors looking for quality Rookie of the Year futures should start at DraftKings. It has a clean, easily navigable user interface and odds for a number of NBA betting markets.

New bettors are entitled to bonuses at sportsbooks and sportsbook apps. DraftKings is no different. We don’t have specific welcome bonuses to share at the moment, but when sportsbooks arrive in North Carolina, there will be welcome incentives – bonus bets, odds boosts, deposit matches, etc.

FanDuel Sportsbook

FanDuel is another platform synonymous with online sports betting. Like DraftKings, FanDuel offers a variety of basketball markets with quality NBA betting odds. That certainly includes ROY prices.

Bettors can place wagers on the app and the online sportsbook. That makes it an easy and convenient experience no matter your level of expertise.

FanDuel also offers incentives for new users, including a ‘No Sweat First Bet’ that returns site credits for users who lose their first wager. Be sure to keep an eye open for the specific bonuses that become available in North Carolina.

Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars isn’t dubbed the “King of Sportsbooks” for nothing. It offers a high-quality NBA betting experience with daily odds and props in addition to futures.

As we suggested above, there isn’t one sportsbook that owns the title of “best odds,” but Caesars bettors will be happy with the prices offered at the sportsbook.

North Carolinians won’t know what the exact welcome bonuses available to them will be until Caesars reaches the state’s borders. But when that day comes, there will be bonuses, rest assured.

When is the best time to bet on NBA ROY race?

There simply is no “best time” for placing a bet on NBA Rookie of the Year odds. Making that determination isn’t based on just one or two factors.

In fact, some of it is based on feel. While that is a vague concept, it won’t take long before you find the approach and bets that work for you.

If you’re a bettor who is willing to assume some risk, placing a wager earlier than later often presents the best profit opportunity. This isn’t always the case, but bettors will find that odds tend to shorten (meaning less profit) as the season nears and progresses.

Of course, a bet earlier in the process carries more risk because of the unknowns: preseason injury, modest playing time, etc. Waiting until later in the process provides more information to base a wager on, but with more information comes shorter, less profitable odds.

Naturally, the “best time” to place bets on the best NBA rookie is going to depend on your objective. If you want to take a stab at a long shot, the chances of him winning honors are slim anyway. Why not take a stab at his odds when they’re at their longest (most profitable).

If you want to gamble on a favorite, his odds may similarly shorten throughout the season. However, if the immediate odds to win NBA Rookie of the Year are not appealing, it’s not uncommon—even for the presumptive favorites—to see them fluctuate enough early in the season to find a bit more value.

A slow start or an early-season injury could prompt the preseason favorite to drop down the odds board a little bit, providing a better eventual payout.

Is it worth betting on a heavy favorite for ROY?

Sure.

That isn’t to be noncommittal or funny. There’s nothing wrong with betting on a favorite. It’s just important to understand that the potential payout will be lower on the favorite.

However, that underscores a factor new bettors should understand, especially those who would like to make sports betting a long-term hobby.

Like other forms of gambling and forecasting, it’s a good idea to have a diversified mix of wagers. Betting on favorites and netting modest profits may be too exhausting for impatient bettors. However, chasing long odds and theoretically big paydays is a recipe for clearing out your bankroll.

So, again, yes, it is absolutely worth betting on a favorite if it fits your profile as a bettor. Of course, how heavily favored a player is matters as well. When the odds become especially short, the reward may not be worth the risk.

For example, a $100 wager on -150 odds pays out $166.67. That’s $66.67 in profit plus the original $100 stake. Someone building a balanced betting portfolio may find that payout appealing on relatively “safe” bets. What if those odds shorten to -350? That means the net is only $28.57.

At some point, each individual bettor has to determine a comfortable threshold of risk. And as we’ve illustrated, the spectrum of risk is fluid, for both favorites and underdogs.

Which positions are best for the NBA ROY Award?

Bettors shouldn’t be overly concerned about specific positions when considering wagers on NBA rookies. Each first-year NBA player enters his own unique situation. Analyzing those circumstances should take precedence over evaluating, say, guard vs. center.

Bettors placing wagers on rookie odds are better off focusing on the role destined for the individual newcomers. Will this player start? Will he be thrust into a high-usage role? Who is/are the current star(s) on the team? In what phase of development is the team? Is the squad rebuilding, targeting a championship window, or somewhere in between? These factors are much more relevant than the position.

With that said, with the game transitioning away from a traditional inside-out dynamic, centers have become less frequent winners of the award in recent years.

Karl-Anthony Towns (2015-16) is the most recent center to win Rookie of the Year honors. Before that, Emeka Okafor (2004-05) claimed the title. That’s quite a gap.

Point guards and wings have been the most frequent winners in recent seasons as teams lean heavily on perimeter-led offenses. That’s a macro, game-wide trend. It doesn’t mean centers are inherently less likely to win though. It’s just a matter of the right player and the right situation.

What other NBA awards can be bet on?

NBA fans and bettors can find plenty of non-ROY futures to wager on. MVP odds are another very popular category for individual futures bets.

For bettors who want to go deeper, many top NC sportsbooks offer odds on:

  • Most Improved Player
  • Defensive Player of the Year
  • 6th Man of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
