PNC Arena Guide

PNC Arena is a sports venue in Raleigh, North Carolina. It’s home to the Carolina Hurricanes, a renowned NHL franchise, and 2006 Stanley Cup Champions. The 23-year-old indoor arena also hosts home games for NCAA Division 1 hoop team, the NC State Wolfpack

The complex is slated for major upgrades, including a complete renovation of the arena and its surroundings. The enhancement project was supposed to include a retail sportsbook or sports lounge, but those plans have been derailed.

Namely, SB 688, a bill that would have allowed betting lounges at NC sports venues, was voted down by the House committee in June 2022

That said, there are two retail sportsbooks in North Carolina, both located within Caesars properties in the western part of the state.

In light of what transpired in the previous legislative session, it wouldn’t be outrageous to assume that NC is on the verge of legalizing state-wide mobile sports betting. It’s likely that sports venues like PNC Arena will get a piece of the action when that day arrives.

About PNC Arena

PNC Arena is one of North Carolina’s three major sports venues and the only one outside of Charlotte. It’s home of the Carolina Hurricanes, who won the Stanley Cup in 2006, bringing the first professional sports title to the Tar Heel State.

PNC Arena Location

Outsiders coming to North Carolina may wonder, “Where is PNC Arena?” It’s in Raleigh, the state’s capital.

PNC Arena is located at the following address: 400 Edwards Mill Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607.

When you arrive at the City of Oaks, you can’t miss the arena. It’s the city’s hub for music, entertainment, and sports, so any local will be able to direct you to it.

The facility is located just minutes from RDU International Airport, seven miles west of downtown, and three miles from North Carolina State University. As it’s situated just off I-40, visitors can easily access it from all parts of NC, including the neighboring cities of Durham and Chapel Hill.

PNC Arena is next to Carter-Finley Stadium, home to the NC State Wolfpack football team. It’s also adjacent to the NC State Fairgrounds.

PNC Arena Features and Amenities

PNC Arena’s capacity for ice hockey games is 18,680 and is currently ranked 11th in terms of seating capacity in the NHL.

PNC Arena is a large facility, even by modern standards, measuring 700,000 square feet. Seating at the venue is divided into four levels and can accommodate 20,000 visitors in total.

The arena hosts 13 luxury loge boxes, 61 luxury suites, and 2,000 club seats. Sections 201–230 make up the club level. PNC Arena seating chart is available on the venue’s website in case you’re interested in catching a Canes game.

Food Options

Food and beverage options abound on every level. Throughout the venue, there are 20 permanent concession stands and 50 portable outlets. Among the offerings are stadium staples (popcorn, pretzels, nachos) and the NC’s signature smoked sandwich with homemade coleslaw.

Located on the club level of the arena, the Arena Club Restaurant offers fine dining in the south end. Right next to it is the Ledge Lounge which has a full-service bar. There is also a full catering service that can accommodate 1,000 people.

PNC Arena is primarily an arena for sporting events. Still, it also serves as an entertainment venue hosting more than 150 events a year, including concerts and family shows like the Ringling Bros and Disney on Ice.

PNC Arena History

PNC Arena opened on July 22, 1997, and the construction was completed in time at the cost of $158 million.

The venue became operational in Oct. 1999, just in time for the NFL season. The Hurricanes had relocated to Raleigh from Hartford, Connecticut a year prior and changed their name. They were previously known as Hartford Whalers.

Over the years, the arena has undergone a number of renovations, including upgrades to the scoreboard and sound system, as well as a few name changes. When PNC Financial Services acquired RBC Bank in 2012, the name was changed to PNC Arena.

Upcoming Overhaul

PNC Arena is undergoing a $225 million facelift that will take effect in the near future. Funding for the project would come from food, hotel, and beverage taxes.

Improvements will be both cosmetic and functional. The designers plan on adding a larger team store, more space for walking around the arena, and additional food and beverage options, among other things. As part of the project, a new staff-day entrance will also be incorporated.

Sports Betting at PNC Arena

Throughout the entire legislative session in 2022, the general consensus was that SB 688 would pass, ultimately bringing sports betting to NC venues like PNC Arena. The legalization efforts, however, came to a halt at the House hearing in June 2022 when the bill was narrowly rejected, 51:50.

That said, sports betting is not currently available at PNC Arena. Late 2023 may be the earliest we see a sportsbook on the premises and the best sportsbook bonus offers in North Carolina.

Bets Offered at the Carolina Hurricanes Arena

It is not possible to place sports bets at PNC Arena. Generally, sports betting isn’t widely available in North Carolina. At present, there are only two sportsbooks operating in the state: one at the Cherokee Casino Resort and the other at the Cherokee Valley River Casino.

PNC Arena Partnerships

As of right now, neither PNC Arena nor the Carolina Hurricanes have a sports betting partnership.

PNC Arena Parking

PNC Arena parking prices are consistent with other sports venues in the country. For basketball games, tickets start at $10. For Hurricanes games, the cost is slightly higher, as follows:

  • Cars and Vans: $25 for general; $35 Premier; $45 Premier gold lots (Gate F and Gate D)
  • Limousine, Mini-bus, Bus, and RV: $65

These are prices for playoff games and are subject to changes.

You can get a small discount for pre-purchasing parking tickets, while vouchers can be bought online at Ticketmaster or ParkWhiz.

It should be pretty easy to find a parking spot around PNC Arena since there are 8,000 parking lots nearby, which open three hours prior to the faceoff.

There are several highly-rated accommodations near PNC Arena:

PNC Arena Online Sportsbooks

There aren’t any legal sports betting apps in North Carolina right now. According to the structure of last year’s sports betting legislation, it is safe to expect that future sports betting legislation would include sports venues in NC. In any case, mobile sports betting, once legalized, will be available state-wide, including at PNC Arena.
