On The Skids
With a 3-0 start straight-up and against the spread the Panthers made an early case as a playoff contender. However, the tide has turned, and they have lost and failed to cover in three straight.
The offense deserves to shoulder much of the blame. They rank 25th in offensive DVOA and are middle of the pack in points per game (23.8). While the defense has played well this season — No. 8 in DVOA and No. 6 in OPPG (20.2) — it hasn’t been able to carry a sporadic and ineffective offense.
Quarterback Sam Darnold has followed up one of the best three-game stretches of his career with a pair of clunkers. Darnold accounted for eight total touchdowns from Weeks 2-4 and eclipsed 300 yards passing in each of those contests. In the two games since, he’s been sacked seven times and has thrown four interceptions.
Misery Loves Company
As poorly as the Panthers have looked in recent weeks, things have been just as bad for the Giants.
The G-Men are also led by a young, volatile, turnover-prone signal-caller. In fairness to Daniel Jones, he was forced out of Week 5 with a concussion before coming back to throw a trio of interceptions in a Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Panthers supporters will look to the absence of all-world running back Christian McCaffrey as the source of their struggles. The Giants have been without many of their key offensive players as well. Running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) missed Week 6 along with wide receiver Kenny Golladay (knee). To make matters worse, electrifying rookie Kadarius Toney (ankle) left last week’s game in the first quarter.
The health and availability of those players will be worth monitoring leading up to Sunday’s kickoff.
Considerations For Panthers vs Giants Betting Odds
Bettors could find the Panthers laying the key number of 3 at several shops as of Tuesday afternoon, including FanDuel and BetMGM.
FanDuel, however, adjusted the vig, listing Carolina -3 (-102) and New York +3 (-120). It’s not the only shop taking this approach. WynnBet installed the Panthers -2.5 (-120) with the Giants +2.5 (-120).
There’s not a lot of value on the money line with most books dealing the Panthers at -150 to win outright. FanDuel was offering the best price for Panthers backers at -148. As far as the Big Blue, DraftKings was offering +140 odds on the Giants pulling off the upset.
